About the project

Watermark Creative brings together the work of many artists. The platform had to let each creative securely manage their own portfolio without touching anyone else’s, make thousands of artworks easy to discover, and protect the artists’ work from unauthorized use.

I engineered a custom theme with distinct user roles and permissions, a tag-based artwork search system and access-control and content-protection layers that keep artists’ work private where it should be.

My role

WordPress Developer

I owned the WordPress side of the project end to end: designing the custom theme and data structure, implementing roles and permissions, building the search system and delivering the access-control and content-protection layer.

  • Custom theme development
  • Roles & permissions
  • Search & taxonomy design
  • Security & access control

What I did

  • Custom theme

Bespoke theme built around creatives’ portfolios and artwork presentation.

  • Distinct user roles

Roles and capabilities that let creatives securely manage only their own portfolios.

  • Tag-based search

Artwork search built on tags and taxonomies, so work is found by style, medium and theme rather than by scrolling.

  • Access control

Permission layer governing who sees and edits which content.

  • Content protection

Measures to protect artists’ work and privacy across the platform.

  • Data structure

Custom post types and taxonomies for artworks, artists and collections.

Technical challenges & solutions

  • Many authors, one site

Dozens of creatives needed to manage their own portfolios without seeing or breaking each other’s content.

Introduced distinct user roles with scoped capabilities so each artist edits only their own portfolio.

  • Discoverability at scale

A growing artwork library was hard to browse with standard categories.

Built a tag-based search system on custom taxonomies, making artworks easy to find by style, medium and theme.

  • Protecting artists’ work

Portfolio content had to be shown to the right audience while staying protected from misuse.

Implemented access control and content-protection rules to ensure the security and privacy of artists’ work.

Impact & outcomes

  • Self-service portfolios

Creatives publish and update their own work without developer help.

  • Better discoverability

Visitors find work by style, medium and theme instead of browsing everything.

  • Protected content

Access control keeps artists’ work secure and private.

  • Scalable structure

Clean CPTs and taxonomies ready for more artists and collections.
